Behaviour, heart rate, and heart rate variability in pigs exposed to novelty R. Bras. Zootec.
Zupan,Manja; Framstad,Tore; Zanella,Adroaldo José.
ABSTRACT In the present study, we investigated behavioural responses and determined parameters of heart rate variability (HRV) to elucidate a relative activation of autonomic nervous system (ANS) during baseline (10 min) and in response to potentially stressful situations (10 min) in two pig breeds and sexes. Gilts (n = 21) and barrows (n = 9) of the Landrace × Yorkshire (LY; n = 15) and Landrace/Yorkshire × Landrace/Duroc (LYLD; n = 15) breeds were subjected to a novel object test (NOT) and a novel arena test (NAT). Basal ANS state differed in pigs across breeds but not sexes. Landrace × Yorkshire pigs had a significantly lower basal heart rate (HR) and low-frequency band (LF) with a higher root mean square of successive interbeat intervals (RMSSD) and...

Chemical composition and fat profile of meat from crossbred goats reared under feedlot systems R. Bras. Zootec.
Madruga,Marta Suely; Medeiros,Ertha Janine Lacerda de; Sousa,Wandrick Hauss de; Cunha,Maria das Graças Gomes; Pereira Filho,José Morais; Queiroga,Rita de Cássia Ramos do Egypto.
This study aimed to evaluate the chemical quality and fat profile of meat from crossbred goats (native and exotic) reared under feedlot systems. Thirty-two entire male goats were divided in equal number into four racial groups: eight pure Boer breed, eight ¾ Boer + ¼ SPRD crossbred, eight ½ Boer + ½ SPRD crossbred and eight ½ Anglo Nubian + ½ SPRD crossbred. All goats were reared under feedlot system and slaughtered at the average age and live weight of 223 days and 29 kg, respectively. The chemical composition including moisture, protein, ash, fat, cholesterol, phospholipids and fatty acids was determined. The breed types had no significant effect on moisture, protein, ash, fat, cholesterol and phospholipids contents. However, the percentages of oleic and...

Economics of alternative growth path, time of calving and breed type combinations across southern Australian beef cattle environments: grass finishing at the Victorian experimental site AgEcon
Graham, John G.; Quinn, Helen; Davies, Brian Lloyd; Griffith, Garry R..
The Beef CRC “Regional Combinations” project and its biophysical outcomes have been described in a range of journal articles and project reports. In this project, different combinations of beef cattle genetics, growth/nutritional pathways and calving seasons were examined across a number of sites in southern Australia for achievement of targeted market specifications. The information provided in these papers and reports allows identification and evaluation of the most profitable regional beef cattle production systems. The focus of this paper is on the Victorian experimental site, where the cattle were finished to slaughter weight on pasture. A range of breed types was included with emphasis on high retail beef yield and high intramuscular fat. Two...

Effect of photoperiod on sexual activity of boar R. Bras. Zootec.
Savić,Radomir; Petrović,Milica.
The main objective of this study was to assess the effect of photoperiod on sexual activity of three breeds of boars: Swedish Landrace (n=34), Large White (n=38), and Duroc (n=32). Boar sexual activity was analysed based on the libido index and intensity of ejaculation. The libido index was calculated as the ratio between the duration of ejaculation and time of preparation until ejaculation. The intensity of ejaculation was the volume of ejaculate (mL) secreted in the unit of time (min). The effect of photoperiod was analysed as the effect of duration of daylight (<12 h and >12 h) within photoperiod intervals (increasing and decreasing). Impact assessment was carried out by applying the General Linear Model procedure. Libido and intensity of...

ENVIRONMENTAL AND GENETIC EFFECTS ON PRODUCTION TRAITS OF EWES ORIGINALLY FROM DISTINCT ENVIRONMENTS Ciência Rural
Oliveira,Nelson Manzoni de; Moraes,José Carlos Ferrugem.
Wool production and reproductive performance components of similar genotypes, brought from distinct production areas, were evaluated during five years trial at similar environments, such as, joining season and stocking rate on winter improved pasture. The least squares means revealed that the origin (breed) effect concentrated upon the Corriedale ewes wool production, whereas in Romney females it affected the reproductive performance. In the abscence of interaction between origin (breed) and year for most variables, it was assumed that the farm management procedures and/or selection criteria applied on hoggets were determinant of the subsequent lifetime production within each genotype examined. Expecting a better reproductive performance in Romneys, mainly...
